Raiders Intend To Sign Luke Getsy As New Offensive Coordinator

Once more, the Raiders from Las Vegas have found their man. Sports Illustrated reports that Luke Getsy, the Chicago Bears’ dismissed offensive coordinator on January 10, will likely take over as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator going forward.

This is only hours after Kliff Kingsbury said he was out of the race for the position and that he was currently in talks to become the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.

Five applicants were interviewed by Las Vegas for the position, including Getsy, Kingsbury, former offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt of the Cleveland Browns, UCLA coach Chip Kelly, and Mike Sullivan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who coaches their receivers.

Antonio Pierce, the head coach of the New Raiders, stated that he was looking for an offensive coordinator who could be a superior instructor in addition to being able to average 24 points per game.

That’s only part of Getsy’s narrative; his Bears squad finished worst in passing offense in 2022 (130.5 yards per game) and only somewhat improved to 27th last season (182.1). For Getsy’s former Bears quarterback Justin Fields, who played admirably after recovering from a finger injury for the second half of the season, Las Vegas has been floated as a potential trade destination.

When Fields returned, Chicago won 4-3, although the Bears were competitive in every game they played. In addition to running 77 times for 420 yards and three touchdowns, the third-year quarterback completed 127 of 208 throws for 1,361 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.

With several years of playing together in Green Bay, the soon-to-be 40-year-old coach also has a great deal of familiarity with Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams. After getting drafted in 2014, Getsy worked as an offensive quality control coach from 2014 to 2015. In Adams’ final two seasons at Wisconsin, he went on to become the quarterbacks coach in 2019 and the receivers coach from 2016 to 2017.

The Packers had the ninth-best passing yard average during Getsy’s final two seasons with the team, and in his first season as Adams’ receivers coach, Green Bay’s passing attack ranked in the top five.

Pierce and newly appointed general manager Tom Telesco both want Las Vegas to have a strong vertical team that can run the ball well. In 2022 and last season, Getsy’s attack in Chicago proved to be effective there, finishing as the top running unit (177.3) and second (141.1).
