Russell Westbrook: Joined The Leeds United Ownership Group

Russell Westbrook has begun playing professional football in England. On Thursday, Westbrook revealed at a Sportico sports and entertainment gathering that he had joined the investing group that bought Leeds United. Westbrook made a financial commitment to 49ers Enterprises, the investment division of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, which acquired the majority ownership of Leeds from outgoing owner Andrea Radrizzani in June.
Westbrook’s official investment date and current ownership percentage are unknown.
Earlier this summer, in free agency, Westbrook decided to sign a two-year, $8 million contract to remain with the Los Angeles Clippers. He entered into that agreement after his previous supermax contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder expired. In 21 games with the Clippers last season, Westbrook, who began the year with the Los Angeles Lakers, averaged 15.8 points and 7.6 assists per contest.
NBA player Russell Westbrook is the most recent member of the new ownership group. Larry Nance Jr. of the New Orleans Pelicans and T.J. McConnell of the Indiana Pacers acquired tiny ownership holdings in the team last month. The ownership group now also includes golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.
Last month, it was claimed that 49ers Enterprises agreed to purchase Leeds for roughly $213 million. That agreement was reached after Leeds’ expulsion from the Premier League earlier this year. The team would have been valued considerably closer to $500 million had they remained in the Premier League.
Since 2017, Radrizzani has held the dominant stake in Leeds and owned roughly 56% of the company. Since then, he has acquired a majority stake in the Italian team Sampdoria. In 2018, 49ers Enterprises made its first investment in Leeds.
