Victor Wembanyama‘s new life in the United States has undoubtedly begun excitingly. The first choice in the 2023 draft has already been embroiled in celebrity disputes, followed by a dreadful second NBA Summer League debut.

Wembanyama lived up to the lofty expectations set for the French star in his second NBA Summer League game wearing a San Antonio Spurs jersey.

A powerful double-double was produced by the 7’4″ prospect in San Antonio’s 85-80 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. In addition to 12 rebounds and three blocks, Wembanyama scored an impressive 27 points on 9 of 14 shooting.

His nine points on 15.4% shooting in his Spurs debut against the Charlotte Hornets was a long cry from this performance.

“Wembanyama” commented following the Hornets game:

“Honestly, I didn’t really know what I was doing on the court tonight; there’s no better way to start, but I’m trying to learn for the next games. The important thing is to be ready for the season.”

Following the Blazers game, the young man commented on the significant improvement in his second performance:

“I think it’s normal to get better every game. Two days ago, I played my first game. I wish we could have won,” Wembanyama added. “I think I could have done more to help my team win the game. We’ve got to keep learning.”

Gregg Popovich, the longtime head coach and president of the Spurs, was present for the entirety of the Frenchman’s performance. The 74-year-old Coach Pop has recently agreed to a new five-year contract with the Spurs, allowing him to hold the record for most victories in the history of the NBA.

Following his outstanding accomplishments in basketball, Popovich will also be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in August.

The announcement of Pop’s deal will excite Spurs supporters since it will allow Wembanyama to play for NBA Legends while honing his skills in the league.

After the draft, Wembanyama spoke about his new head coach:

“He’s not intimidating yet, but I’m sure he’s going to get intimidating when I see him in real life.”

Tuesday’s matchup between the Spurs and the Wizards in the Summer League will be their second opportunity to avenge their loss to the Blazers.
