With his ESPYs address, LeBron James puts to rest any (self-created) doubts about his retirement. I’ll retire from playing when I’m no longer able to leave it everything on the court. Thank goodness it’s not that time already.

On Wednesday, LeBron James made it official that he will be rejoining the Lakers for his 21st NBA season.

James spoke about his plans after winning the ESPY for Best Record-Breaking Performance, honouring his 2017-18 season when he passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

Whether I can score more points or not is irrelevant to me, James added. Can I participate in this game without resorting to cheating? ” I will retire from playing when I am no longer able to leave it all on the court. Thankfully, that time has not yet come for you.
After the Lakers were swept in four games by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference finals, the 38-year-old superstar’s future became a topic of conversation. James immediately afterward, in a cryptic manner, suggested he would retire.

“We’ll see what happens going forward,” James remarked. Saying, “I don’t know. I have no idea. To be completely forthright, I have a lot on my mind. To be completely forthright, I have a lot on my mind.

To paraphrase, “Just for me personally going forward with the game of basketball, I’ve got a lot to think about.”
This was a radical departure from James’s previous outlook. James has shown interest in having his oldest son, Bronny, join him in the NBA on multiple times, most recently in May.

“I was serious,” James emphasised. And I mean this with all sincerity. Obviously, I need to maintain the health of both my body and my intellect, but the latter is more crucial.

Rob Pelinka, general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, reportedly indicated that LeBron James was “doing the behind-the-scenes work” in front of the upcoming season.

James has just completed another highly effective campaign. James led the Lakers to a resurgence after the trade deadline and an appearance in the Western Conference finals, averaging 28.9 points (the fifth-highest total of his career), 8.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists in 55 regular season games.
The Lakers acquired Gabe Vincent and Taurean Prince to an already potent squad in the offseason in order to increase their chances of making a deep playoff run in 2023-24.

Whatever the case may be, the Lakers’ biggest (non-)question of the offseason looks to have been addressed.
