When FIFA announced on Friday that the United States would host the 2025 Club World Cup, the first iteration of a more considerable competition featuring many of soccer’s top stars, the country further solidified its position as the sport’s leading center for the following years.
Both the 2024 men’s Copa America and the 2026 men’s World Cup will be hosted by the United States. Additionally, it frequently hosts regional competitions, like the CONCACAF Gold Cups for men and women, and it aspires to co-host the Women’s World Cup with Mexico in 2027. The Olympics in Los Angeles will follow in 2028.
FIFA will now aim to duplicate its crown jewel on the club side in the United States, one year before the 2026 fiesta.
At the moment, the eight-team Club World Cup is comprised of the continent’s winners. But starting in 2025, it will switch to a four-year, 32-team, month-long competition.
There are 32 teams total, with 12 coming from Europe. The last three UEFA Champions League champions—Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester City—have already earned a spot in the tournament. There will be participation from several more prominent football businesses.
The competition will occur within the typical World Cup window of 2025, June, and July. The biggest single-sport event in recorded human history will therefore serve in part as a dress rehearsal and introduction.
At a virtual meeting this week, FIFA’s Council, the group with the most authority in the organization, decided on the United States.
“The decision was reached based on the United States’ position as a proven leader in staging global events and because it would allow FIFA to maximize synergies with the delivery of the FIFA World Cup 2026, to the benefit of both tournaments and the development of football in the North American region.”
FIFA said in a statement.
Dates, venues, and formats for the matches have yet to be made official. Over the upcoming months and years, they will be chosen. However, several of the 11 U.S. cities and venues that will host World Cup matches in 2026 are also anticipated to be picked as hosts of the 2025 Club World Cup.
Who will compete in the Club World Cup in 2025?
On the other hand, FIFA has already approved the tournament’s qualifying rules, and the pitch is already taking form.
It will consist of five clubs from North and Central America, four from Asia, four from Africa, six from South America, one from Oceania, and 12 from Europe, with the United States serving as the host nation.
Since 2021, the following clubs have already qualified as continental champions:
- Real Madrid (Spain)

- Palmeiras (Brazil)
- Flamengo (Brazil)
- Monterrey (Mexico)
- Seattle Sounders (U.S.)
