With 18 holes remaining, the lead was six strokes, while Jon Rahm was nine shots behind.

For the following matches at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, scheduled for October 1–2, near Rome, Italy, Viktor Hovland became the third player to secure a spot on the team.

Three players are chosen from a European Points List and three from a World Points List for the six automatic qualifiers for the European squad. Following Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, who qualified via the European Points List, the 25-year-old Norwegian became the first player to do so.

Hovland, now ranked No. 5 in the world, has made 21 PGA Tour starts this year and has placed impressively 16 times in the top 25. He won the Memorial and finished T-2 in the PGA Championship. Following his T-7 at the Masters and top-20 results in the U.S. Open (19) and Open Championship (T-13), Hovland has also performed admirably in the other majors this year.

Viktor Hovland debuted for the European team in 2021, but the Americans swept to a 19-9 victory at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, and Hovland ended the week 0-3-2.

In the afternoon fourball match against Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay, he earned a point with Tommy Fleetwood after losing to Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa, 3 and 2, with Paul Casey.

After defeating Hovland and Bernd Wiesberger in the morning foursomes on Saturday by a score of 2 up, Thomas won his second tie of the week when he faced Morikawa in the Sunday singles.
