Driver Cody Ware was placed under suspension by NASCAR on Monday following his arrest for felony assault in North Carolina.

A felony complaint of assault by strangulation and a misdemeanor count of assault on a female were filed against Ware after his Iredell County Sheriff’s Office arrest on Monday. Ware skipped Sunday night’s dirt race at Bristol Motor Speedway due to a “personal matter,” according to his Rick Ware Racing organization, and was fired soon after the news of his arrest spread.

The 27-year-old Ware raced in most Cup Series events in the last two seasons after making his Cup Series debut in 2017. In 97 career starts, he has driven for his father’s back marker squad and has averaged finishes below the top 30. Ware’s only top 10 results occurred in the chaotic 2022 summer Daytona race, where he placed sixth.

Ware had his most incredible NASCAR season in 2022. Before being hurt in an accident at Texas Motor Speedway, he was scheduled to run all 36 races for the first time and had an average finish of 28th. When Ware’s car struck the outer wall head-on and the inner wall of the pit road due to the first hit’s damage, the driver sustained an ankle injury.
