F1 Academy: In 2024, Formula 1 Weekend Featuring All-Female Racing Competition
The first season of the all-female F1 Academy series is scheduled to start in April, but only one of the seven rounds—the Austin, Texas, Grand Prix in October—will be contested on F1 weekends in 2024.
According to F1 president Stefano Domenicali, the F1 Academy series will only be contested during Formula 1 race weekends in 2024.
The last round of the seven will be contested at an F1 Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, in October, although the all-female series is scheduled to start its maiden season in April.
The news comes after it was made clear earlier in March that Susie Wolff, a former Williams’ development driver, will oversee the category.
In an interview with Sky Sports F1 on Friday at the Australian Grand Prix, Domenicali said he could confirm that the F1 Academy will be on the racing weekends of F1 next year.
Of course, that won’t be the case everywhere. He added that they are eager to ensure this will be the perfect catalyst for the season’s expansion.
F1 took the initiative on this project to have an impact, investing in the idea that by raising awareness of the industry, they can actually, ideally as soon as possible, have a girl, a woman in F1.
“That’s what I hope and that’s why we’re investing a lot.”
Five teams—ART, Campos, Carlin, MP Motorsport, and Prema—will compete in the championship for younger drivers. Each team will enter three cars to create a 15-car field.
The season will begin on April 28-29 in Spielberg, Austria, with the 15 participating vehicles on the track for the first time on April 11–12 at the Circuit de Barcelona–Catalunya for an official test session.
A new series has been developed to provide future female drivers with the best chance to succeed at the top level of racing.
Wolff continued that it’s fantastic that the F1 Academy will compete at F1 events next year, underscoring the significance of the series to Stefano and the team at F1.
“We are looking forward to getting the season underway in a few weeks’ time, and while there is lots of work to do, we are forming a clear plan to build a project that really works for the future of female talent in motorsport.”
