The 18-time Grand Slam singles winner and International Tennis Hall of Fame member remarked at the Italian Open on Sunday after collecting the “Racchetta d’Oro” (Golden Racket) honor for her accomplishments in the sport, “I’ve gone through a challenging year, but now I’m OK.”
The prognosis seemed cheerful, and the 66-year-old Navratilova announced in January that she would begin therapy that month. In November, while watching the season-ending WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, her neck’s lymph node was enlarged, which she found. Her early-stage throat cancer was discovered through a biopsy, she said at the time.
According to Navratilova, the unrelated, early-stage breast cancer was found when she had throat testing.
In a March interview with TalkTV’s Piers Morgan, Navratilova stated that physicians had assured her that “as far as they know, I’m cancer-free” and that she should be “good to go” following some extra radiation therapy. Navratilova had returned to her job as a TV pundit at the Tennis Channel.
Speaking to the audience at Campo Centrale in Italian, Navratilova accepted the award.
“Tennis gave me a surprising life for which I am very grateful.” “I always tried to give something back when I played, and also in retirement.”

At the Foro Italico, Navratilova finished second in the singles competition four times and won the doubles competition three times. At 46, she won her final Rome championship with partner Svetlana Kuznetsova.
She won 59 Grand Slam matches, including 31 women’s doubles matches and 10 mixed doubles matches. The most recent was in 2006, a month before she turned 50, when she and Bob Bryan won the mixed doubles championship at the U.S. Open.
After winning a record 167 singles matches, Navratilova retired in 1994 after spending 331 weeks atop the WTA rankings. In 2000, she joined the circuit again to play doubles and made a few singles appearances.
