Juan Manuel Marquez thinks the WBC should deprive Canelo Alvarez of his championship since the talks between him and David Benavidez have stalled.
When it became evident that a rematch with Dmitry Bivol would only occur in 2024, many assumed that a primetime fight between Canelo and Benavidez would be decided quickly.
But talks have stalled, and the longer Canelo waits to fight, the unhappy the rest of the division is.
No one wants to see potential title contenders’ careers put on hold, especially after the COVID-19 outbreak caused significant harm to professional boxing.
In Marquez’s opinion, Alvarez should be disciplined for following the regulations because he is attempting to avoid making the required defense of his WBC title.
Juan Manuel Marquez told ProBox TV Espanol,
“They have to ignore and strip the champion of the title if he does not want to make his mandatory defense, and it seems that it is the World Boxing Council that has to exercise the regulations.”
Canelo has been told to protect his championship.
Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the CMB, was the one who earlier reminded Canelo Alvarez that he must defend his belt, despite all of Marquez’s complaints.
Alvarez must defend his belt, but the time limit permits the Mexican to first engage in a free-for-all battle with a rival of his choosing.
Since the discussions for the rematch between Bivol and this opponent failed, the issue is much further behind schedule than anticipated.
For a long time, Marquez has been a loud opponent of Alvarez and his group, and the most recent incident hasn’t changed his mind.
“We are clear, the regulations have to be carried out, of course we know that Benavidez is the official challenger and he has to fight Canelo Alvarez.”
“He is the undisputed champion at 168 pounds, he has to make the mandatory defense, if Canelo doesn’t want to fight Benavidez, and he has to leave the title vacant.”
