The investigation into potential sports betting infractions by Iowa State athletes is ongoing at this time. In May, the university announced that 15 players across several sports had reportedly engaged in illegal sports betting.
The investigation into the players’ suspected sports betting is ongoing, and Iowa State and coach Matt Campbell have yet to hear the conclusions.
In May, the University of Iowa and Iowa State released separate announcements alleging that players at both campuses had engaged in online sports betting.
According to Iowa State, “approximately 15” currently participating athletes have allegedly placed wagers in violation of NCAA rules, including at least one football player.
On Thursday at Big 12 media days, Campbell was asked about the probe and replied that it was still active. Campbell was questioned “specifically” about starting quarterback Hunter Dekkers, but he avoided the topic in his response.
Campbell said that an inquiry is still being conducted. It still doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but I think we’re coming closer to understanding it.
My gratitude lies in the fact that they’ve allowed me to be detached from the procedure and have instead promised to deliver the outcomes to me whenever they become available.
What I’d like to say to any of our young guys who are or aren’t involved in this is that it’s a valuable education. I enjoy teaching in part because you get to work with young males between the ages of 18 and 22. There is a set of regulations to follow.
It’s a terrific opportunity to learn how to respond to setbacks and handle challenging situations, as we will in the not-too-distant future when we find out what happened there.
“I know our football team, and certainly the young men in our team, will do a great job of that once it’s time to have clarity to that and then respond to that in the right way.”
There is no evidence connecting Dekkers to the accusations. He did not participate in media days as a representative of Iowa State.
It is unusual for a returning starting quarterback to skip out on preseason media days, but it has happened before. Dekkers started all 12 games for Iowa State in 2022, throwing for 3,044 yards and 19 touchdowns with 14 picks.
New punishments for players who break NCAA gambling rules were announced in June. A player who places bets of $200 or less must complete sports betting rules and prevention training.
If a player’s bet is between $200 and $500, 10% of his or her points will be deducted. If a player bets between $500 and $800, he will lose 20% of an eligibility season, and if he bets more than $800, he could lose 30% of an eligibility season.
The NCAA can extend a player’s suspension by more than 30 percent if they are determined to have made excessive wagers of more than $800. Players might lose a season of eligibility for even a little wager under the old NCAA standards.
