Bill Belichick Equals NFL Records For Most Head Coach Losses
Bill Belichick has the most losses of any head coach in NFL history.
In Sunday’s game against the Jets, Belichick’s Patriots suffered their 165th regular-season defeat. This puts him in a three-way tie for the most defeats in an NFL regular season with Dan Reeves and Jeff Fisher.
Over his head coaching career, Belichick has lost 178 games (postseason included). Along with Tom Landry, who also lost 178 games overall in the regular and postseason seasons, it matches him for the most ever.
In terms of the most victories in the regular season, Belichick ranks third in NFL history. After George Halas (318) and Don Shula (328), Belichick has won 302 games during the regular season. After Shula’s 347 victories, Belichick has 333 wins (postseason included) to move ahead of Halas for second place.
It seems improbable that Bill Belichick, who is 71 years old, will coach for a longer period of time than Shula, but if he does, he will own the record for most defeats in NFL history.
