McLaren Envisions Verstappen's Absence From The World Championship

In light of the current circumstances, Zak Brown, executive director of racing at McLaren, thinks a different driver combination for the team would impact the World Championship differently.

This season, Red Bull is, without a doubt, in the lead in Formula 1. The results of Checo Perez have prevented them from reaching their full potential despite their clear dominance in both the drivers’ and constructors’ world championships.

Despite finishing second place overall, the Mexican driver sits 125 points behind his teammate Max Verstappen. In contrast to Perez, who has only placed third in seven of the 12 races, the Dutch driver has won every one.

In light of the current circumstances, Zak Brown, executive director of racing at McLaren, thinks a different driver combination for the team would impact the World Championship differently.

“As much as Red Bull’s killing everyone right now, it’s Max who’s killing everyone right now. That Max-Red Bull combination is just unbeatable at the moment, and Max and the team aren’t making any mistakes.” “If they had two Sergios in the car, with all due respect, this championship would be wide open. So you’ve got something pretty special going on with Max and Red Bull.”

Zak Brown told ESPN.

Brown emphasizes that just one of Red Bull’s drivers is the difference-maker, even if he agrees with everyone else that Red Bull is superior this year.

Reviewing the outcomes, he notes that there would have been five winners if Verstappen had not participated.

Brown added, “If you take Max out of it and take everyone who’s finished second this year and give them a win, it would be a pretty competitive, exciting championship.” “We’ve had a second, Aston’s had a second, Ferrari’s had a second, Mercedes has had a second, Sergio’s had a second. You would have five teams that would have won a race this year.”

A season with scant top-level activity

However, bringing things back to reality, nobody has been able to stop them or even approach them in a world where Max Verstappen still exists.

Brown admits that he would want to see that alter in this regard to have a more alluring rivalry. He wants to modify the current situation, where the activity is well below the grid’s top.

“As soon as we all catch up to Red Bull I think that’s going to be the state of play for Formula 1.”
